Centro Cultural Aztlan is delighted to present local Artist Raul Servin, who will be unveiling new artworks for his upcoming solo exhibition entitled “Puro Chile Series”at Galeria Expresion on Friday, July 9, 2010.

 

Born in 1946, in Acapulco, Gro., Mexico, Servin commenced his artistic studies under the tutelage of Maestro Genero Bernal at the Instituto Nacional Bellas Artes.  Servin assisted in founding “El Jardin de Arte de Acapulco” held several teaching positions and exhibited extensively throughout Mexico.  In 1968, Servin came to San Antonio to help paint various murals for the Flying Indians Pavilion at Hemisfair.  His participation in the San Antonio art scene continued by joining numerous local arts groups (River Art Group, Los Angeles Heights Art Space, Artists Cooperatives, galleries, studios, museums and cultural centers).  Servin’s artwork is sought after by collectors, art patrons and art lovers.  He continues to exhibit extensively throughout the State of Texas, the United States and abroad.

 

Geared with a fresh outlook, Servin’s creations are brilliant in its facility for utilizing art to bridge his Mexican-ness with his American experiences.  Servin, asserts that –- “the purpose for this series wasn’t to paint the different kinds of “chiles” but to make visible the struggles and celebrations of my people on both sides of the border.  For this series, I try to blend my hybrid Mexican culture and American experiences into a single entity.  I combine history, mythology, religion, politics and struggles, past and present, real and contrived.  At the end of this series I have a sense of fulfillment in my purpose of adding more color, and spice to the series as well as identity.”

Opening reception for “Puro Chile Series” is on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Aztlan/Galeria Expresion located at 1800 Fredericksburg Rd., Suite 103 in the Historic Art Deco Building.
