The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center presents the 31^stAnnual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio May 15 - 17, 2012at the historic Guadalupe Theater (1301 Guadalupe St. @ S. Brazos) and May 18 - 20, 2012 at the nearby Rosedale Park (303 Dartmouth). Highlights of the festival include star-studded performances by Conjunto Music Hall of Fame legends as well as special presentations by national and international conjunto musicians.

Ticket prices for the three-day musical showcase at Rosedale Park are $15 on Friday and $18 per day on Saturday and Sunday. Three-day Festival passes are $35 for GCAC members, $40 for non-GCAC members.

Other highlights of the 31^stTejano Conjunto Festival include a free Seniors Conjunto Dance, “New Directions” concert, and the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame Dinner & Baile. The festival features over 35 of the very best bands in conjunto music at Rosedale Park that includes conjunto jam sessions; plus food and beverage booths, accordion raffle, student recital and more.

Blue Star/Red Dot 2012, co-chaired by Stacey Hill & Erick Schlather and Mark & Liz Tullis, is San Antonio’s most highly anticipated art sale of the year, benefiting Blue Star Contemporary Art Center’s exhibitions and educational programs. This fundraiser provides the opportunity to purchase contemporary artwork selected by collectors from around the state and supports San Antonio’s premier contemporary art institution. Luminaria is our largest fundraising event, and to make it successful we depend on volunteers. The money raised through our operating the concessions at Luminaria supports theFund's mission, and Luminaria. Since Luminaria is a non-profit and free to the public, the operation of the event depends on sponsorships, and fundraising. So you see how important the volunteers are to us, each one is making a difference and supporting the arts in our community.

The food vendors that theFund has recruited to participate, donate 25% of their income for the evening as well.

The Luminaria t-shirts that are sold support the production and the artists at Luminaria.

The new date for Luminaria, May 5th, is rapidly approaching and we still are in need of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, you will be making a difference, please visit our Luminaria volunteer page for more information and to sign up.

I am the Fiesta Arts Fair volunteer coordinator here at the Southwest School of Art. We are still in need of volunteers this Sunday, April 22^ndin the Children’s Art Garden from 12:30-3:00 or 2:30-5:30. Please forward this e-mail to anyone who might be interested. We have 5 slots available from 12:30-3:00 and 20 slots from 2:30-5:30. Duties include assisting the lead artist in one of the following activities: mono prints, stained glass, fiesta-garden medals, beading, face painting, stamp art, clay, embossing metal, or fiesta crowns. No experience needed and groups are welcome to show their school pride by wearing matching t-shirts or hats. Water, soft drinks, and light snacks will be provided and volunteers may come enjoy the fair before their shift. The fair begins at 11:00 on Sunday, but the volunteer entrance will be open by 10:00. This is a great Fiesta event and for those who have never been, it’s a great way to experience it without paying the admission fee. Volunteers in the Children’s Garden need to be at least 16 or about to turn 16. We also have shifts for ages 14 and up on Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 helping artists take down their booths after the fair.

4-5 volunteers to pass out flyers during the week of April 23-27 on your schedule to restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.

4-5 volunteers Sat, April 28th at 2:30 pm to pass out flyers at the Talons game at Alamodome.

NOTE:

If you received this email you are already registered to volunteer May 5th so there is no reason to respond unless you need to change your shift.

Volunteer parking has been reestablished for the May 5th and I will email out new parking vouchers when they are available. Volunteer Check-in location has changed- will send map next week.

San Antonio Announces
3rd Annual LUMINARIA: Arts Night in San Antonio
March 13, 2010

SAN ANTONIO—The award-winning Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio will take place 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, March 13, 2010 with performance stages, streetscape art, light installations and galleries. The celebration will be in downtown San Antonio on Alamo St. between Market and Durango, including the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, HemisFair Park and La Villita. The 3rd annual, FREE and open to the public celebration of San Antonio’s artists, musicians, performers and cultural organizations is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Texas and was inspired by similar celebrations in Chicago, Paris, Rome and Madrid.

Luminaria 2010 is being co-chaired by Paula Owen, artist and President of the Southwest School of Art & Craft; and George Cisneros, artist and co-founder of Urban 15. An artist-driven celebration, Luminaria is a collaboration of several hundred artists and more than 40 non-profit organizations coming together to magnify every major discipline in the arts including dance, theater, creative writing, music, visual arts, new media and interdisciplinary projects. Already, Luminaria has attracted more than 100,000 participants in both 2008 and 2009 and has received national and international acclaim. Luminaria 2009 received a Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association and is being recognized during the 55th IDA Annual Conference in Milwaukee.

Artists and non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit an application for participation in Luminaria 2010. The application form will be available for download at www.luminariasa.org by September 20, 2009. The deadline for submitting proposals is 5 p.m. CST on October 31, 2009.

As the arts calendar in San Antonio resumes full speed this fall, pressure is mounting on the Bexar County Arts and Cultural Fund, better known simply as theFund. Area arts organizations in general have seen donations shrink during the economic recession. Those seeking new sources of donations have difficulties doing so. TheFund itself is closed to organizations it doesn't already support. Only 4 years old, theFund has supported 28 arts groups since its start, a large commitment compared to similar arts fundraising organizations around the country. TheFund operates similar to the United Way. More than 60 employers wishing to support the arts set up payroll deductions for employee voluntary donations. TheFund participates in the United Way's various combined campaigns. Direct individual, corporate and foundation gifts also are sought. Our Mission To provide financial operating support to qualified arts and cultural organizations through workplace giving campaigns, corporate grants, and individuals. Our History In the spring of 2003, Bexar County Judge, Nelson Wolff, introduced the idea of creating theFund after learning about the success of united arts funds in other cities from Dennis Cuneo of Toyota Motor Manufacturing. During the summer and fall of 2003, an extensive list of arts and cultural supporters and administrators worked on the concept for theFund. An area wide survey conducted indicated that 70% of those surveyed would make a payroll deduction gift to a United Art Fund if given the opportunity. For clarification here are the choices as we define them:

Folk Art is characterized by a style, in which traditional rules of proportion and perspective are not employed.
