It is that time of year again. Luminaria is March 10th this year, only 38 days away!

If you would like to volunteer and have not yet submitted your volunteer information form this year, than please do so now so we can count you in. We would love to have you.

Since Luminaria will be starting at 7 pm and going till 1 am, we particularly need people to fill the later shifts, so please note if you are willing to work a later shift.

As we lock down the details, we will be sending you important updates.

We have some new ideas this year. Well lit Information signs with volunteers posted to help direct inquiring minds.

A new look for t-shirts, which you will receive free, if you volunteer.

More Food vendors, this year, so new tasty treats to try.

Volunteer Meeting March 3rd at HemisFair Park at 4pm for Information Volunteers and anyone else who wants to come and walk the park and find out where all the important stuff will be.

Saturday, February 25, 2012; 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm @ Trinity University'sLaurie Auditorium

Dust off that instrument case, put some rosin on your bow, get a new box of reeds, and oil those valves--it’s time to start practicing again for 2012 Symphony PRO-AM!

Apply nowto join the Symphony and Music Director Sebastian Lang-Lessing for a side-by-side rehearsal and performance featuring composer Franz Liszt's famous symphonic poem, Les Préludes. Or come just to listen and watch; general admission is FREE and open to the public! The rehearsal will take place February 25, 2012, from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm, followed by the performance at 7:30 pm.

HOW TO APPLY:

Participants must be age 25 or older, be able to read music and play an instrument that is part of the standard orchestra instrumentation.

All applicants must register online. Space is limited, so register early! The deadline for online registration will be Monday, February 6, 2012.

Applications will be confirmed by email. Further details will be sent to selected participants in the acceptance email.

YOSA's most advanced ensemble, the YOSA Philharmonic, presents its third concert in the 2011-2012 Gold Series, “Beethoven and Orpheus,” featuring Mexican pianist Abdiel Vázquez and conducted by YOSA’s Music Director Troy Peters. The performance, as a featured partner in the San Antonio Symphony’s Beethoven Festival, will be held at The Laurie Auditorium on Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets will be available for purchase in advance through Ticketmaster or by calling YOSA’s office at 210-737-0097. YOSA presents works inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus, featuring Mexican pianist Abdiel Vázquez in Beethoven’s epic Fourth Piano Concerto. Donald Braswell Producing A Major Music Event Benefitting Haven For Hope

Donald Braswell and his new three tenor trio, Gli Unici, are bringing their powerful new show to San Antonio on January 7. 3rd Annual LUMINARIA: Arts Night in San Antonio
March 13, 2010

SAN ANTONIO—The award-winning Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio will take place 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, March 13, 2010 with performance stages, streetscape art, light installations and galleries. The celebration will be in downtown San Antonio on Alamo St. between Market and Durango, including the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, HemisFair Park and La Villita. The 3rd annual, FREE and open to the public celebration of San Antonio’s artists, musicians, performers and cultural organizations is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Texas and was inspired by similar celebrations in Chicago, Paris, Rome and Madrid.

Luminaria 2010 is being co-chaired by Paula Owen, artist and President of the Southwest School of Art & Craft; and George Cisneros, artist and co-founder of Urban 15. An artist-driven celebration, Luminaria is a collaboration of several hundred artists and more than 40 non-profit organizations coming together to magnify every major discipline in the arts including dance, theater, creative writing, music, visual arts, new media and interdisciplinary projects. Already, Luminaria has attracted more than 100,000 participants in both 2008 and 2009 and has received national and international acclaim. Luminaria 2009 received a Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association and is being recognized during the 55th IDA Annual Conference in Milwaukee.

As the arts calendar in San Antonio resumes full speed this fall, pressure is mounting on the Bexar County Arts and Cultural Fund, better known simply as theFund. Area arts organizations in general have seen donations shrink during the economic recession. Those seeking new sources of donations have difficulties doing so. TheFund itself is closed to organizations it doesn't already support. Only 4 years old, theFund has supported 28 arts groups since its start, a large commitment compared to similar arts fundraising organizations around the country. TheFund operates similar to the United Way. More than 60 employers wishing to support the arts set up payroll deductions for employee voluntary donations. TheFund participates in the United Way's various combined campaigns. Direct individual, corporate and foundation gifts also are sought. Mark your Calendars for next year's Luminaria: March 10, 2012 ARTIST Application for 2012 Changes in selection process Volunteer theFund's Involvement with Luminaria History Luminaria's first year, 2008, theFund staffed just a couple of information booths with a handful of adventurous volunteer Board members. The second year, 2009, we added a t-shirt booth to raise money for the artists. The third year, 2010, we added Beer concessions, also to raise money for the arts, along with continuing to staff and manage Information tables, and Retail tents. 2011, theFund Volunteer Corps, then added planning and implementing the food concessions, to the management of the other concessions. Each year we have recruited volunteers to meet the new demands of the growing event. Who Benefits? Thanks to the city of San Antonio, a multitude of sponsors, and volunteers, entrance into Luminaria is free....

For clarification here are the choices as we define them:

Music- Includes all forms, from singing to symphony, and all genres, classical to rock.

Dance - this includes all forms of dance from ballet to hip-hop.

Folk Art is characterized by a style, in which traditional rules of proportion and perspective are not employed. Art that is produced generally by people with no formal training, or by members of a cultural group to preserve its traditional culture. It often times is predominantly functional. Sculptural objects in wood, stone, and metal include toys, spoons, candlesticks, and religious items. Deorative objects constructed of existing objects. Folk architecture may include public and residential buildings, such as eastern European wooden churches and U.S. frontier log cabins. Paintings are usually incorporated as decorative features on clock faces, chests, chairs, and interior and exterior walls.Other examples of visual folk arts are woodcuts, scrimshaw, pottery, textiles, costumes, and traditional clothing.
