Blessed with uncanny instrumental chops, a multi-lingual voice that is part angel and part siren, and a natural beauty that borders on the hypnotic, the 20-something prodigy-turned-pro might well be the hope for the future of jazz and instrumental music.

A past sidewoman with jazz heavyweights Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Michel Camilo and Regina Carter, Spalding, at age 20, became the youngest faculty member in the history of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. Blue Star Contemporary Art Center and the San Antonio Botanical Garden

Greetings everyone!

On behalf of our friends at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, we at Blue Star would like to pass on a call for entries that we believe may interest the artists among us.

San Antonio Botanical Garden Call for Entries:

Calling all designers to create original proposals for Playhouses & Forts, an exhibit scheduled to debut June 26, 2010 at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

Ten winning designs will be chosen and commissioned for building. "Targeted to entertain adults and children alike, these interactive creations will entertain and inspire thousands of visitors to the Garden," says Garden Director Bob Brackman.

Open to everyone, the design contest encourages submissions from artists, architects, businesses, families, neighbors, community groups and innovative individuals. Collaboration between individuals and businesses is encouraged.

To learn the rules and review the guidelines, a pre-design meeting offering full entry information is scheduled at the Botanical Garden on Friday, January 22, 2010. The designs are due February 26, 2010. Ten designs will be selected by March 15, 2010 by a panel of judges.

The winners will then be given a $3,500 stipend to build and install their design in the Garden next summer. The competition is endorsed by the American Institute of Architects San Antonio chapter. For more information, contact Marisa Ayala at mayala@sabot.org or 210-829-5360.

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is located at 555 Funston at North New Braunfels Avenue with free parking. The Botanical Garden is operated under the auspices of the City of San Antonio Department of Parks & Recreation and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. 3rd Annual LUMINARIA: Arts Night in San Antonio
March 13, 2010

SAN ANTONIO—The award-winning Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio will take place 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, March 13, 2010 with performance stages, streetscape art, light installations and galleries. The celebration will be in downtown San Antonio on Alamo St. between Market and Durango, including the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, HemisFair Park and La Villita. The 3rd annual, FREE and open to the public celebration of San Antonio’s artists, musicians, performers and cultural organizations is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Texas and was inspired by similar celebrations in Chicago, Paris, Rome and Madrid.

Luminaria 2010 is being co-chaired by Paula Owen, artist and President of the Southwest School of Art & Craft; and George Cisneros, artist and co-founder of Urban 15. An artist-driven celebration, Luminaria is a collaboration of several hundred artists and more than 40 non-profit organizations coming together to magnify every major discipline in the arts including dance, theater, creative writing, music, visual arts, new media and interdisciplinary projects. Already, Luminaria has attracted more than 100,000 participants in both 2008 and 2009 and has received national and international acclaim. Luminaria 2009 received a Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association and is being recognized during the 55th IDA Annual Conference in Milwaukee.

Artists and non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit an application for participation in Luminaria 2010. The application form will be available for download at www.luminariasa.org by September 20, 2009. The deadline for submitting proposals is 5 p.m. CST on October 31, 2009.

theFUND feeling recession bite

As the arts calendar in San Antonio resumes full speed this fall, pressure is mounting on the Bexar County Arts and Cultural Fund, better known simply as theFund. Area arts organizations in general have seen donations shrink during the economic recession. Those seeking new sources of donations have difficulties doing so. TheFund itself is closed to organizations it doesn't already support. Only 4 years old, theFund has supported 28 arts groups since its start, a large commitment compared to similar arts fundraising organizations around the country. TheFund operates similar to the United Way. More than 60 employers wishing to support the arts set up payroll deductions for employee voluntary donations. TheFund participates in the United Way's various combined campaigns. Direct individual, corporate and foundation gifts also are sought. To date, theFund has distributed more than $465,000 to the 28 arts organizations since it began collecting donations in late 2005. Overhead expenses...

Luminaria, Arts Night in San Antonio - REGISTERATION ENDS MARCH 1, 2010

Luminaria will be held on March 13, 2010 from 6 p.m. – 12 Midnight. Volunteers are needed March 12 and 13 to help set up, take down, provide and distribute information, give directions, etc.
Volunteer registration has begun for 2010 at .

theFund organizes "the volunteer corps" for Luminaria, San Antonio’s free celebration of the arts presented by the creative leaders in San Antonio. In 2009 more than 40 non-profit organizations, over 1,000 artists and performers and over 100 volunteers came together to showcase the talent and creativity of San Antonio in a city wide celebration. Close to 200,000 people attended.

In order to facilitate the event, theFund volunteers help by providing the hospitality that San Antonio is known for as well as information about the event, distributing maps and brochures to the visitors-- all to help enhance the experience.

Several times a year theFund participates at community festivals to introduce theFund to the citizens of San Antonio. LUMINARIA March 13th, 2010 6pm - 12 am Map Luminaria, San Antonio's Arts Night is a free event, open to the public. There will be 5 performing arts stages and visual arts will be on display in the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. There will be beer concessions, and drinks and food booths in La Villita. Saving for One $93.50* Saving for Family of Two $133.50* Saving for Family of Four $328.70* Each time you use it, you save. *Savings based on using the FUNd card only once at each affiliate while your card is active. However, there is no limit on how often you use your card while your card is active. Allocation Qualification Process

The 27 organizations that are currently qualified for operating support from theFund met the following criteria:

501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity who is categorized with the Internal Revenue Service as an arts and cultural entity;
have been in existence at least five years from the date of their application;
have an annual operating budget of at least $200,000;
have at least one full-time paid professional staff position;
have an office(s) located in Bexar County;
are not an individual artist or government-related agency
conduct an employee campaign for their organization
have a proven broad-based community impact
display theFund logo and statement in all programs and publications

Each year the theFund Allocation Committee reevaluates each organization’s proof of fiscal responsibility. Allocation payments are determined based on a percentage of audited expenses.

Currently the application process is closed. theFund will not be accepting applications for new affiliates for the foreseeable future.
