February is American Heart Health Month, a time to pay special attention to understanding, preventing, and treating heart disease - the leading cause of death in the nation. Fortunately, heart disease is preventable, and there are many things people can do to reduce their risk.

Caring for yourself is essential to keep your heart healthy. The good news is that The Fund and our partners at Health by Design can help!

DID YOU KNOW STRESS CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK FOR HEART DISEASE?

Your body's response to stress is supposed to protect you. But, if it's constant, it can harm you. The hormone cortisol is released in response to stress. Studies suggest that high levels of cortisol from long-term stress can increase blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and blood pressure. These are common risk factors for heart disease. DID YOU KNOW HEART DISEASE PREVENTION STARTS IN CHILDHOOD?

You may think of heart disease as a problem for adults, not for your young children. But the CDC says obesity affects 1 out of every 5 U.S. children. Diet and exercise habits started in childhood can start a lifetime of heart health or heart damage. Click here to learn more.
